Four Doctors and a Dalek walk into Buckingham Palace…
Underappreciated Monsters: The Plastics, Doctor Who, 2005, ‘Rose’
I think sometimes the Plastics are not as appreciated as much as the Daleks or even the Weeping Angels, who for me are freaking scary, for much the same reason I find the Plastics so scary: because they are recognizable. My close friends know that I have a fear of automated animals/dolls/clowns, for I am convinced they come to life when we turn our backs or turn out the lights—and not in a cute Toy Story kind of way. I am convinced they are evil, and are made from evil…I’m not sure when this fear started. I had Barbie dolls when I was younger, but not baby dolls. I had a ‘walking’ wind up baby doll when I was very young given to me as a gift…and I hate that thing. Always hated it. It was my first and last doll. I never asked for one for Christmas. I just didn’t trust them.
The same creepy feeling comes upon me when I see mannequins. So, for Doctor Who to create such a monster makes perfect sense to me. They are everywhere, just as they are in ‘Rose’, and they could infiltrate every small boutique and every shopping mall. They would conquer us before we even knew it…THAT is what makes them so scary.
